Chapter 15 Clash of Titans #3

Thor faced it in the stronghold's central section, and the exchange was different from the Mackenzie Basin.

In the Mackenzie Basin he had disrupted the command source, broken its amplification circuit, forced its retreat.

This was not a disruption scenario. This was the command source at the level it had been building toward, and it was not retreating.

She was moving through the stronghold toward the central section, and she was reading the engagement on the frequency channel.

Thor was fully engaged, running at the maximum available output, and the command source was matching it, because it was at threshold and threshold was sufficient to match an Aesir at full expression.

She had not expected this. She reached the central section.

The physical sensory experience of the wrongness at that concentration combined with the Aesir fire at full output was a sensory environment that pushed her perception pathways toward their current limit.

She held through it. She kept moving.

Tyr was on the two remaining command class entities at the section's edge managing them, holding them from the central exchange, keeping the command source's defensive assets contained.

She understood immediately what he was doing and she understood that the two entities he was managing were a problem she could address.

That freeing Tyr from the containment role and getting him into the central exchange would change the balance of it.

She engaged the first. She had Brightmetal and five years of training.

And the grim committed quality of someone who has been doing this work since seventeen and knows how to do it.

The command class entity was larger than the standard and was partially engaged with Tyr and her approach from its undefended side was the advantage she was looking for.

She drove the Brightmetal tool into its upper mass at full discharge and held the discharge and the entity's response was the response of something encountering the divine frequency disruption from the inside at close range.

The violent disruption that Brightmetal produced at contact rather than at the throw range she usually worked at.

Her right arm said what it said about this approach.

She held through it. She discharged again.

The entity was disrupted significantly but not ended.

It was degraded to the point where Tyr could complete it and did so.

"Go," she said. To Tyr. Toward the central section.

He went. She turned to the second entity.

The second entity was the one that had been designated, in the command source's defensive planning, as the human element interceptor in this section.

It was positioned for her specifically with the tactical intelligence of the command source.

Directing its defensive assets with the precision of something that could run full tactical assessment simultaneously with a direct divine engagement.

It came at her. She was faster than expected, she had the advantage of the perception. The advantage of reading the approach before the physical contact range, the same advantage she'd always had in her fieldwork that had become more significant as the training developed it.

But her right arm was fully at its maximum now. The fracture site was not functional in the way she needed it to be functional. She was at the operational juncture where the inventory said this asset is degraded beyond reliable deployment in the current mode.

She shifted to left dominant. The left hand had Brightmetal. The left dominant combat configuration she'd been developing since the fracture, not the strongest available, but operational. She'd drilled it. It was operational.

The entity closed. She read the approach and moved to her left and the Brightmetal discharge connected at the entity's contact point and the disruption was less than the righthand discharge would have produced.

The left-hand output was lower. The asymmetry of nondominant side deployment, and the entity was not significantly degraded.

She moved. Read. The entity repositioned with the intelligence of something that had assessed the change in her capability and was adjusting to exploit it.

Right. It knows your arm. She positioned for the next approach, and she read the frequency and she prepared to engage again. And then she felt it.

Not the entity in front of her. Not Thor's frequency or Tyr's or any of the assault team. Something else. Something that came from inside her own perception, from the trained pathways, from the sensitivity she'd been developing for six weeks with complete commitment.

The wrongness in the central section was running at the threshold level.

It was the full concentrated root note at the level of a force that had been built for this.

And it was she who had a word for what she felt, the thing that happened in her perception at this level of exposure.

Not disorientation. Not pain, exactly. The perception instrument encountering the signal was built to detect, at the signal's maximum intensity, and responded with the full resonance of the detection.

She understood something in that moment.

Something that had been built in the background of everything for six weeks and that was now, at this level of saturation, completely clear.

The perception pathways she'd been developing were not only detection pathways.

They were resonance pathways. The capacity built from the phenomenology of experience was not only the capacity to sense the wrongness frequency.

It was the capacity to respond to it.

Not to generate it. She was not divine. She had no divine power, no Aesir fire, no frequency generation capacity.

But the perception at its current level of development, at the level it had reached through six weeks of the most intensive deliberate practice she'd been capable of was a resonance capacity.

The ability to be in frequency, with the wrongness signal, and to interact with it at the level where it was most vulnerable.

The same vulnerability that Brightmetal exploited, but at the frequency level rather than the physical level.

She did not have time to analyze this completely.

She had an entity in front of her and a central section where Thor and the command source and Tyr were in a maximum intensity exchange and the gap between the current situation and the required outcome needed to be closed.

She let the perception run at full. All the management was off volume control; the careful modulation she'd been maintaining to prevent the wrongness from becoming overwhelming. She let it run at full capacity, the full resonance, the full depth of the pathways that had been building for six weeks.

And she directed it. Not at the entity in front of her.

At the command source in the central section.

She did not have a mechanism for this that she could have described in technical terms. She had the perception and she had the honest understanding that she was human and not divine and could not generate frequency but could be frequency.

Could be fully in the wrongness frequency and fully in opposition to it simultaneously, the paradox of a perception that was also a countersignal. The command source felt it.

She knew it felt it because the root note changed.

A signal in its own frequency saying no.

One second. The command source's engagement with Thor shifted for one second the fractional attention toward the new frequency input, the disruption quality, the one second in which the maximum intensity pressure of its direct engagement dropped.

Tyr and Thor used the second. The combined engagement of an Aesir at full expression and one of the oldest divine warriors in the nine realms, both at maximum output, into a one second opening in a maximum intensity opposing force.

The root note fractured. Not the way it had fractured in the Mackenzie Basin; not the controlled fracture of a retreat, the withdrawal of something conserving what it had.

This was a different fracture. A coherence failing, of a system that has been pushed beyond the structural integrity of what it is, the failure that happens when the force against a thing exceeds the thing's capacity to hold itself together.

The command source's frequency presence in the stronghold collapsed inward. Not gradually. Not with the retreat quality. With the collapse quality of something that has lost its structural coherence and is falling into itself at the rate that things fall when there's nothing left holding them up.

She was still standing. She had managed the left-hand entity while the frequency resonance ran managed it on instinct and five years of trained response, the body knowing what to do while the mind was elsewhere.

The entity was disrupted and still. She was standing and her right arm was at zero available capacity.

Her perception pathways were the full resonance exposure had cost something, had spent something in the way that maximum output always cost the capacity that produced it. She was still standing.

She looked at the central section. The command source was ending.

Not quickly. The drawn-out quality of an incredibly old thing that has lost its coherence and is losing the rest. Thor was in the central section with Mjolnir and the Aesir fire, and he was completing it with the full weight and commitment of what he was.
