Chapter 17 The Judgment of Stone

MERCEDES

Morning light filters through the bedroom windows, a faint, cold gray.

Claudia is still asleep beside me, her breathing steady, her dark hair spilled across the white pillow like a stroke of ink.

She looks so serene, completely free of the tension from the last few weeks.

I freeze just watching her, my heart aching with a tenderness that terrifies me.

Last night... last night I burned down my own chapel of discipline just to build a home for her. I don't regret a single touch.

I get up slowly, trying not to wake her. I put on my gray pantsuit, pin my hair up with my usual rigidity, but when I go to fasten my collar, my fingers reach into empty space. The gold cross is still on the nightstand, catching the morning light.

I stare at it for a few seconds. I leave it behind. Putting it on today feels like the ultimate hypocrisy.

An hour later, the chill of San Griselmo’s cloister hits me like a slap of reality. I walk toward my office with firm steps, but before I can reach the stairs, the department clerk meets me, her face pale and an envelope in her hand.

"Dr. Almeda... the dean wants to see you in his office immediately. He asked me to give you this."

I open the letterhead envelope. A single typed line, clinical and devastating: Dr. Mercedes Almeda is summoned to an extraordinary meeting with the dean and the moral theology commission at ten o'clock sharp.

My pulse stops. I check my watch: five to ten.

Dean Valenzuela’s office is a shrine to stale opulence, lined with portraits of past rectors and smelling thickly of cigars and old carpet.

When I walk in, I find the mahogany desk isn't occupied by the dean alone. To his right, sitting perfectly upright in a leather chair with a blue folder on her lap, is Dr. Clara Leguina. She flashes a look of absolute triumph, like a reptile that has finally cornered its prey.

"Come in, Mercedes. Close the door, please," the dean says, his icy solemnity a sharp contrast to his usual easygoing nature.

I do as he asks. I sit in the empty chair across from them, keeping my chin up, forcing on the mask of the untouchable professor.

"What is the urgency, Dean? I need to prepare for this afternoon's seminar."

"I'm afraid this afternoon's seminar is the least of your worries, Mercedes," Clara Leguina interjects, opening the blue folder with theatrical slowness.

"We've been tracking a... completely inappropriate pattern of behavior in your department for weeks.

At first, it was just hallway gossip, lapses we wanted to attribute to the loose structure of the Salamanca trip. But today, suspicion becomes fact."

Clara pulls three photographs from the folder and slides them across the mahogany toward me.

My breath hitches. The floor drops out from under me.

The first photo shows me at the entrance of my building in the rain, pulling a drenched Claudia inside.

The second, taken a few hours earlier, shows Claudia leaving her apartment building with a gray canvas duffel bag.

In the third, taken late at night, Claudia’s silhouette is perfectly framed against the dim light of my bedroom window.

"A concerned neighbor, worried about the decency of one of our most distinguished professors, delivered these this morning," the dean says, looking at me with a mix of pity and disgust. "This is a scandal, Mercedes.

An offense against San Griselmo's moral code, against the dignity of your chair.

.. and with a graduate student who still has to defend her thesis. "

"This is grounds for immediate expulsion for both of you," Clara Leguina pronounces, savoring every word.

"For you, the revocation of your tenure and public disgrace across all ecclesiastical universities.

For Miss de la Vega, the voiding of her transcripts, the cancellation of her thesis, and immediate expulsion for disorderly conduct with a faculty member.

Her academic career will die before it even begins. "

The word expulsion hits my stomach like a knife, cutting off my breath.

Not her. Claudia destroyed her safe life for me.

She has the most brilliant mind this university has seen in decades.

Her thesis is her life, her future, her freedom.

I can't let them destroy her. I can't let the mud of my own existence drown her.

I look at the dean. His eyes are searching for any weakness, any confession of shared guilt.

And in that moment, amid the ruin of my world, I realize what I have to do. I understand my final sacrifice.

"You're entirely mistaken," I say, my voice sounding so steady, so cold and certain that even Clara Leguina flinches in her chair. "The photos are real, but your interpretation is completely wrong."

"Oh, really?" Leguina arches an eyebrow, skeptical. "Are you going to tell us you were discussing Saint Augustine at three in the morning in your bedroom?"

"No," I reply, holding her gaze with absolute contempt. "I'm going to tell you that Miss de la Vega is a victim of my own weakness."

The dean frowns, bewildered. "What do you mean, Mercedes?"

"I mean that Miss de la Vega came to my home last night out of desperation, broken after a breakup with her partner, seeking the shelter and counsel of her mentor.

And I... I took advantage of her vulnerability.

" I lie without blinking, feeling every word tear away a piece of my soul, but knowing it's the only way to save her.

"I've been obsessed with her for months.

I've been manipulating her advisor meetings, forcing conceptual tension into her thesis just to draw her into my orbit.

She is an innocent victim of my own unraveling.

She didn't know how to react to my... my harassment.

She simply let herself be carried away by the fear of failing, by the submission she owes her department chair. "

Clara Leguina stares at me, her mouth slightly open, unable to believe I am self-immolating like this. The dean leans back, horrified.

"Mercedes... are you confessing that you forced a relationship with a student in your department?" the dean asks, his voice barely a whisper.

"I am confessing that all the blame for this scandal rests on me, and me alone," I state, as a single tear of pure desperation burns against the corner of my eye.

I force myself to hold it back. "Miss de la Vega has committed no misconduct.

She was only the innocent object of my weakness.

If you want to expel someone, expel me. Strip my chair.

But leave her thesis untouched and let her defend it before an external committee.

She is brilliant. Her record must stay clean. "

The dean falls silent for an endless minute that feels like a final sentence. He looks at the photographs, then back at me, and nods slowly, reaching a decision.

"If you submit your irrevocable resignation immediately, Mercedes.

.. we will accept your version of events to avoid a public scandal for the university.

Miss de la Vega will be allowed to finish her thesis under an external advisor.

But you... you must leave this campus today.

We do not want to see your name associated with San Griselmo ever again. "

"Understood," I say, standing up with what little dignity I have left. The marble temple of my discipline has completely collapsed, but in the middle of the wreckage, I've managed to keep Claudia safe from the abyss.

I walk out of the dean's office without looking back, each step on San Griselmo’s stone tiles echoing like my own sentence of exile.
