Chapter 6 Echoes Beneath the Vaults

CLAUDIA

Beside me, Mercedes seems entirely unfazed. She’s wearing a tailored pearl-gray wool coat that fits her flawlessly, a black leather handbag, and her usual icy mask. She hasn't looked at me once all morning. All I got was a clipped good morning in the lobby before we set off for the Paraninfo.

"You look pale, Claudia," she says suddenly, without breaking her brisk stride. "I trust last night's distractions won't impact your focus today. This is the most important keynote of the conference."

"I'm fine, Dr.," I reply, quickening my pace to keep up with her. Her scent of orange blossom and powder cuts through the damp chill of the medieval streets. "I’m just... still thinking about last night. What you said about Saint Augustine and grace."

Mercedes tenses, a barely noticeable hitch in her posture. She pulls her bag tighter against her side.

"Last night was a courtesy dinner, nothing more," she says, shutting me down with a clinical coldness. "Today is about academic truth. Don't conflate the two."

We step inside the university’s historic main building.

The lobby is a labyrinth of carved stone and Gothic arches, wrapped in a heavy silence broken only by the low murmur of professors gathering outside the auditorium doors.

Winter sunlight streams at a sharp angle through the high stained-glass windows, casting colored geometric patterns across the worn flagstone floor.

It feels like a temple of knowledge. And Mercedes is its high priestess.

MERCEDES

The Paraninfo is packed. Dozens of somber faces, men in dark suits and calculating eyes, watch me from the carved wooden pews. Dean Valenzuela and Dr. Montero—who is still glaring at me with raw resentment after last night's humiliation—sit at the high table.

I climb the three wooden steps to the podium. My hands are ice, but the moment I rest my notes on the lectern, muscle memory takes over. This is my safe zone. Up here, shielded by the stage and academic detachment, no one can touch me. No one can see the chaos unraveling me from the inside out.

I adjust the microphone. My eyes instinctively scan the third row.

There she is. Claudia has taken a seat near the aisle, her leather notebook open in her lap, a pen balanced between her fingers.

Her dark eyes are fixed on me with an attention so devout, so completely untainted by the dark motives that condemn me, that the air catches in my throat for a brief second.

I whisper a silent, desperate prayer, pressing my hand against the gold cross hidden beneath my silk blouse, and begin to speak. My voice, amplified through the sound system, rings out authoritative, steady, and flawless.

"...because in Augustinian thought, gentlemen, free will is not a license for whim, but the capacity of the soul to choose the supreme good.

And yet, the paradox lies within the very nature of desire.

What happens when the will wavers? What happens when the soul is pulled toward an attraction that reason labels a transgression, but the flesh experiences as absolute truth? "

I let the words hang in the air. The silence in the auditorium is absolute. I know my colleagues are interpreting this as a brilliant theological discourse on concupiscence. But I am not looking at them.

I am looking directly at Claudia.

"Saint Augustine teaches us that internal conflict is not a system flaw, but proof of our human fragility. The real danger isn't feeling temptation; it is self-deception. Believing we can master the abyss with mere human laws when what burns inside us is a force entirely beyond our control."

Across the room, our eyes lock. Claudia's lips part slightly.

I watch her breath hitch, her pen slipping from her fingers onto the page, completely spellbound by my words.

I am speaking to her. Directly to her, masked behind the armor of philosophy.

And the most terrifying part of all is knowing that she, in her beautiful innocence, doesn't yet realize that the theory I am describing wears her name and her face.

CLAUDIA

Mercedes’s voice rings out beneath the vaulted ceilings with a resonance that sends a shiver down my arms. It’s a deep, sharp cadence, laced with a coiled passion I’ve never heard from her back in the lecture halls of Madrid.

I can’t tear my eyes away. From my wooden pew, she looks like an otherworldly being. Sunlight from the side window strikes her profile perfectly, carving out her flawless jawline and the deep burgundy of her lips. She is so beautiful it makes my chest ache.

But it isn’t just her appearance that’s driving me crazy. It’s what she’s saying.

What happens when the soul is pulled toward an attraction that reason labels a transgression, but the flesh experiences as absolute truth?

Those words sink into my gut like a hook.

Suddenly, the temperature around me spikes, despite the cold drafts swirling through the stone building.

I look down at my bare hands. A strange tingling prickles at my fingertips—the exact same heat I felt last night when our knees brushed beneath the tablecloth.

This isn't just admiration. Listening to her voice, watching her knuckles clamp tightly against the lectern... it’s no longer just a fascination with her mind.

It’s a physical ache. An irrational urge to run to her, to tear down the space between us, to touch the silk of her blouse just to see if she burns as hot as her words.

My own thoughts terrify me. What is happening to me?

Javi... Javi has never made me feel this kind of electricity—the kind that paralyzes your legs.

Javi is simple, straightforward, comfortable.

Mercedes is a sheer cliff of golden stone, and I’m leaning over the edge, completely unable to stop myself.

When Mercedes finishes, the auditorium erupts into thunderous applause.

She offers an elegant, practiced nod, stacks her papers with clinical precision, and steps down from the stage.

Several professors crowd around to congratulate her, but she brushes them off with a clipped courtesy, making a beeline for the side exit that leads to the historic cloister.

I bolt from my seat, leaving the other students behind. I have to see her. I need to talk to her right now, even if I have no idea what I'm going to say.

MERCEDES

I flee the crowd. I need air. I need to escape the scrutinizing glares of Montero and Valenzuela, but more than anything, I need to get away from Claudia’s eyes.

My own words taste like ash in my throat.

I stood up there and talked about temptation and the abyss while staring right at her in front of a hundred people—an act of sheer recklessness that could ruin my career if anyone suspected the truth.

I make my way into the university’s upper cloister.

The Plateresque arched galleries are deserted at this hour, wrapped in the pale winter light and the scent of damp stone.

I lean back against a heavy pillar, closing my eyes and pressing my forehead to the cold sandstone, desperately trying to slow my racing heart.

"Dr. Almeda... Mercedes."

My eyes snap open.

Claudia is standing just a few feet away at the end of the gallery.

She’s breathless, her cheeks flushed from running, her dark hair slightly windswept from the breeze filtering through the open arches.

Her dark eyes burn with a feverish intensity—a total devotion that leaves me completely paralyzed.

"You shouldn't be here, Claudia," I say, but my voice sounds like a desperate plea, stripped of all its academic weight. "Students are supposed to attend the panel discussions. Go back to the auditorium."

But she doesn't move. She takes a step forward, then another, closing the distance between us in this stone corridor where the only sound is the distant hum of the city.

"I can't go back in there," she says. Her voice is husky, trembling, entirely stripped of her usual innocent confidence.

"Your lecture... what you said about transgression and desire.

.. it knocked the air out of me. I feel like.

.. I feel like you were speaking to me, Doctor.

Like everything you wrote today was meant for me. "

My breath catches. I press flat against the stone pillar.

Claudia is so close I can feel the heat radiating off her body, the winter scent of her wool scarf mixing with her youthful fragrance.

For an infinitesimal fraction of a second, her gaze drops to my lips before locking back onto my gray eyes, and in that eternal beat, the entire world shatters at our feet.

Claudia’s innocence just shatters into a thousand pieces beneath the vaulted arches of Salamanca. And I don’t have a single prayer left to save us from the wreck.
